Building a Panic Disorder Support Network
social anxiety disorder support group, panic disorder support groups online
In case of Panic disorder (PD), or agoraphobia, a good support network
can be very critical for the recovery. This support system must be based
on the individual needs and goals of recovery. By following some of the
below suggestions, you can build your own support system which can help
in the recovery from PD.
Identify Needs
Prior to getting help from others, you need to decide on what kind of
help is needed and apt for you to recover from PD. Ask yourself (1) are
you in need of someone to give you company for your doctors appointments?
(2) Are you in need of someone to share your opinions and feelings? (3)
Are you in need of someone to go shopping or your other activities? Note
down every of this and then decide.
Identify Recovery Goals
Though others might support you, you need to take some steps yourself
to recover. So identify your goals to recover from PD. It must be easy
and simple to follow, flexible and reasonable. There may be some setbacks.
Do not lose your patience. You can discuss with your doctor if you cannot
do this alone.
Reach Out
After identification of your needs and goals for recovery, it is time
that you need to meet people who might be willing to help you. It is very
important that the people you choose must know your needs and requirements
well so that they can extend a good supportive hand in everything that
matters to you. You also need to make them clear about how they might
be able to help you out of the situation. Do not hesitate. You might need
to face some rejections. Do not feel embarrassed. Hence consider a lot
of people in stead of relying on few to meet your expectations and requirements.
Build a Support Network
In building a system, more people will work out better. Most people with
PD do the same mistake of relying on a single person like a friend, a
spouse, a family member, etc. But you need to understand that the same
person may not be always available to you at times of need especially.
Hence build a network. Include everyone friends, spouse, family members,
other people affected with PD, etc. Specify properly your requirements
to every person individually. It is not possible for everyone to realize
your condition. Do not lose heart. Involve people who take up this in
a positive manner and support you well.
In order to start building your support system, consider the following
ones
Anxiety Support Groups
You are not the only person affected by PD. There are nearly 6 million
people in US affected with PD. Hence do not feel isolated. It is tough
to convince a person without PD and make him understand your condition.
Hence a PD support network can help out well and work better. These people
can understand and realize easily what you feel since they also experience
the same. Hence they will be willing to support each other better than
others. They can also offer advice and tips to be followed in various
situations. You can discuss with your doctor to identify such groups or
search online. You can become a member of the panic disorder support forum
and get more information easily.
Mental Health Professionals
A doctor can be a great support in many cases. They can identify and realize
your condition. They can teach you some steps to follow and practice everyday.
They can listen to your opinions and understand you better.
Family and Friends Previously Not Considered
Making a list of your family members and friends might help you identify
some other people who were initially left out. You can approach them for
your needs at times.
